Shoot Report
This year's Winter
Series had good support, with the format changed to the
best six scores from nine 50DTL shoots starting in
November 2007 with the Peter Rolffe-Budd Memorial
shoot. The series couldn’t have started better, with a
perfect 50/150 score for John MacKenzie pipping Stacy
Gennard by 1 point and Willie Lamont by 3 second
barrels. Family members Hannah Rolffe-Budd and Rob
Marsh also took part in the competition and there was
also a good mix of Juniors, Ladies and Veterans for the
category prizes. The competition continued with the
Cooper Heat Trophy which was retained by Stacy for
another year after shooting another 50/149. His closest
competition Thomas Watson was only 1 target behind
shooting a 49/147. Buff Sinclair was also shooting well
and lead the Veterans shooting a 48/144 and James
Cormack continued his lead in the Juniors category with
a 48/138. The Christmas shoot saw a great turnout of 49
shooters and with nineteen 25 straights on the board,
the competition was hot. Stacy managed his hatrick of
149’s to win the shoot with Donald Mackay, Ian Ross,
Archie Sinclair and Ian Mackintosh only points behind
even after hitting all 50 targets. There were also 6
others with only 1 target away for the day and James
again won the Juniors, with Catherine Fraser taking the
Ladies, Ian Mackintosh the Veterans and Mairi Ross the
Novices.
The New Year’s Day
shoot was attended by 23 guns, but despite the numbers
the standard was still high. Ian Ross took and early
lead with Jamie MacKinnon both shooting perfect first
lines, but Ian managed to follow it up with another,
shooting a possible 50/150. Graham Gray also shot a
personal best of 49/146 for runners-up with 5 others in
the 140’s. Mairi Ross won the Ladies this time, with
Buff extending his lead in the Veteran’s competition and
Gill Naisby winning the Novices. Stacy made another
return for the Phil Morgan Trophy again shooting all 50
targets but with 3 second barrels for a 50/147. Angus
Cameron was only a point behind followed by John
Falconer another point behind. James, Mairi & Buff
continued winning their categories, with Jon Gennard
winning the Novices. The Henderson Trophy was again
another close competition, with Tommy Gunn and Gordon
MacDonald both shooting all 50 targets, but Tommy only
had 2 second barrels for a 50/148. Gordon was amongst
Graham Gray, Ian Ross, Graham MacDonald, Will Smith and
Buff Sinclair all finishing on 49/145. David Grant won
the Juniors with Edie Watson winning the Ladies and Jon
Gennard winning the Novices trophy. The following shoot
for the Edmunson Electrical Shield was again well
supported with 40 guns and more good weather for
shooting. There were four 50 straights with Ian Robb
and Sandy Gall shooting off for high gun both on
50/149. This time there were 15 scores in the 140’s and
Olive Harper won the Ladies with Magnus Swanson winning
the Veterans category. The Country Images Trophy saw
another shoot-off for high gun, but this time between
Graham MacDonald and Tommy Gunn, with the former taking
the trophy. The competition was again very close with
ten 25’s at half way and five 50 straights by the end.
James, Mairi, Buff and Jon won their categories again,
all extending their leads for the final Winter Series
Trophies. The Cameron Trophy shoot was the final round
in the Winter Series and there were a few places in the
categories which depended on the results. Willie
Lamont, Douglas Henderson and Sandy Gall all started
with 25/75's with 5 other 25's not far behind. There
was only one 25/75 in the second half, shot by Willie
Lamont which gave him a perfect score of 50/150 and high
gun for the day. Stacy Gennard was the only other
person to shoot all 50 targets and took the senior
trophy. The Junior trophy went to James Cormack
shooting a personal best of 49/144, with Ladies going to
Mairi Ross, Veterans to Dave Henderson and Novices to
new shooter, Gary Murray with an impressive 47/139 in
his second competition.
The final results for the Winter Series 2008 and Cape
Wrath Hotel crystal bowls saw Stacy Gennard as High Gun
winning the President’s cup after shooting a possible
300 targets and only 12 second barrels for a score of
300/888. The whole competition was well attended and
with 50/147 as the lowest score to win a shoot and with
three 50/150’s along the way the standard was high.
Steel shot certainly seemed to be doing the trick and
with the price staying low in comparison with the lead
cartridges, Deephaven saw an increase in the numbers at
the competitions.
